Transparency Through Student Government

  • Continuing to improve the allocations process. While many student groups benefit from funding SGB provides each year, less than half of all registered student groups at Pitt apply for financial support. We will to collaborate with the Allocations chair and committee to improve the advertising of allocations to all student groups. Currently, SGB holds several Allocations 101 sessions each semester to explain the process in detail to groups. We will increase the number of these sessions and tailor them to certain types of organizations, such as club sports, performance groups, and cultural clubs. This will allow groups to learn specific information beneficial to their missions.

  • Our goal to increase social media usage for Student Government, as well as enforce informative town hall meetings to educate students on the board’s initiatives and listen to the student’s opinions on possible improvements. These initiatives will improve communication with the student body.

  • In order to increase transparency in SGB and the entire allocations process, weekly meeting minutes will be published online and semester funding reports released to the public. The student activities fund is the students’ money and everyone has a right to know where their money is going.

  • We want to combat an issue student groups face on our campus: finding space to hold meetings and events. We have so many great groups that want to put on cultural events, bring in speakers, and host conferences, but there are not enough spaces for them to do this. We will work with WPU Building Management, Student Affairs, and different academic units to open more space up for students.

  • Provide more outlets for student input to SGB. To get a head start, we will hold open office hours through the summer to meet with any interested students. This way we will have more time to formalize the information and research to develop a plan of action for the upcoming academic year. Similar to how Pitt administrators provided open forums to gain student input on the strategic plan, if elected, we will plan to host one open forum at the beginning of each semester specifically for gaining student input on how SGB can better serve the needs of the students.
