Our Academic Ideas

  • We plan to institute a university wide “reading day” on one or more weekdays preceding finals week. Thirteen of the fifteen ACC universities already have this in place, as it allows students a day where they can focus on preparing for exams. Many classes at Pitt have final papers, projects, or tests during the week leading up to finals, making it hard to prepare in advance. A reading day allows for limited distractions leading into finals week, leads to higher scores, and lower levels of stress.

  • Many students face the dilemma of having only 10 minutes between exams. We want to expand time between exams to at least 30 minutes to ensure no one is worried about arriving to an exam on time due to a previous exam.

  • We want to allow students to move exams if they have more than two in the same 24 hour period. The current policy, which allows students to move exams when more than two are in the same day, does not account for multiple exams one afternoon and the following morning.

  • Create a system to release semesterly OMET surveys to the public for access by students. We hold a strong belief that students should have the ability to be well informed when choosing their professors. OMETs are a wealth of untapped information for students who can gain a multitude of opinions on various professors and classes, which is particularly important considering the amount of money students pay for their education. In addition, it may help professors take OMET results more seriously and would make them directly accountable to the students they teach.

  • Continue the work that has been done on creating a Public Health Certificate. 60% of students enter Pitt on the Pre-Med track but are limited in how they can pursue their medical career. By working with various Deans and collaborating across academic units we can make this certificate a reality.
